Water Boosters

What Does a Water Booster Pump Do?

Are you currently dealing with trickling showers in the home? This could mean you’ve got a water pressure problem on your hands. But this is easily fixable with a water booster pump. This system forces water to flow at a suitable pressure, so you’ll never be left with dripping taps and hoses.

What is a water booster?

Unlike a water pump, which is designed to move water from A to B, a water booster increases water pressure and flow.

When several appliances are running at the same time, a property’s water pressure can plummet. This device acts as a buffer to keep water moving steadily. Instead of using fresh water from reservoirs, boosters can even recycle rainwater from the garden to be used for showers and kitchen taps, for example.

How do water pressure boosters work?

There are four main components of a water pressure booster:

  • Motor (which generates the spin of the impellers)
  • Impellers (which move the water along the pipework)
  • Inlet (suction)
  • Outlet (delivery)
  • Flow sensor

The booster works by drawing in water from the source (e.g. a well or pond). When activated, it works similarly to a fan – the impellers spin to boost water pressure through the system. If the pressure drops, sensors trigger the pump to adjust speed. Once normal pressure is restored, the pump switches off.

How to install a water booster

It’s best to hire a professional to install a pressure pump. But it’s worth staying in the loop of how the process works.

First, choose where to install the water booster pump. It’s best to place it near the main water supply. If in any doubt, check the manufacturer’s guide.

Turn off the main water supply and close all taps to drain excess water from the pipework. Connect the pump’s inlet to the water source, and the outlet to the main plumbing system. Then, cut into the pipework to connect your booster pump.

Next, turn on all taps. Check that the water is gushing steadily with minimal spluttering. Finally, check pressure readings and ensure there are no water leaks.

Be aware that running the booster pump can vibrate the entire plumbing system. To reduce this, flexible connectors can be fitted between the inlet and outlet to keep noise to a minimum.

How much does a water booster pump cost?

The price of a water booster pump can vary. Some basic units are available for just a few hundred pounds. However, more advanced systems can run into the thousands.
