How Does a Lift Pump Work?

In most plumbing systems, wastewater needs gravity to flow toward drains. But for homes with basements that are positioned below the main sewer line, this isn’t always the case. Why? Simply, because gravity alone isn’t enough to push the excess water away. But that’s where a lift pump/station comes into play.

What is a lift pump? 

A lift pump (also known as a sewage ejector pump) is an electrically-powered system designed to move water from low-lying areas up to a higher level. The pumped water is then either directed into a municipal sewer line or a septic tank. 

Most homeowners with basements require a lift pump when there is no gravity system in place. If there is no elevation within the pipes, a lift pump actively works to drain water away from the property safely.  

Lift pumps can often get confused with sump pumps. However, there are several key differences. Lift pumps are bulkier and built with grinders to break up sewage debris to prevent clogging. Once installed on-site, they’re labelled as ‘hazardous’ due to the fact that sewage can contain deadly substances.

What does a lift pump do? 

A lift pump is equipped with a plunger, which works with two valves to control the water movement. As the plunger escalates, the bottom valve opens, but the top valve stays shut. This action forcefully pushes water into the chamber. 

When the plunger is forced downwards, the lower valve closes. Then, the upper valve opens, and the water above the plunger is forced out through the discharge spout. This cycle repeats, which in turn transports water to the outlet.

While it’s possible to dig down and install gravity-based sewer pipes to achieve the same result, this solution is far more complex. It requires extensive excavation to maintain a consistent slope so that gravity carries the wastewater away. And in most cases, this costs significantly more than installing a simple lift pit sump pump. You’ll not only be saving huge amounts of time, but also money.
