How do you replace a sump pump?

There’s nothing worse than your sump pump failing during a flood. Unfortunately, though, these situations aren’t that uncommon. Knowing how to replace your pump system is crucial when it comes to flood-protecting your property.

Below are some FAQs about replacing your sump pit, or whether you should just repair it.

How much does a sump pump cost to replace?

The cost of a sump pump replacement depends on several factors.

This includes the type of pump you’re purchasing, and the labour time involved in the installation process. Location can also play a part in the overall cost.

If your current system only requires a straightforward replacement, you can expect to pay around £720 all-in. If you need a new installation of a sump pump (including the pump, pit, and pipes), expect to pay around £2,000.

How often does a sump pump need to be replaced?

You should replace a sump pit every ten years, on average. But, typically, they are at optimum performance around the age of 5 years.

Some pumps can work well for many years. However, it may be time to replace your sump if you notice it isn’t working properly.

If your pump is running often (such as every time it rains or removes large volumes of water), it’s going to suffer wear and tear much faster. Maintenance is also key to lengthening your pump’s lifespan.

Clearing out debris regularly will also improve your pump’s performance. However, be aware that power outages can cause long-term damage – especially if you don’t have a battery backup.

The best way to prolong the life of your sump pump is to test it annually. You’ll hopefully spot warning signs early and decide whether it is best to repair or replace.

Is it easy to replace?

Although replacing a basement sump pump is relatively straightforward, we don’t recommend a DIY job. Professional installation will ensure it has been built and assembled correctly and prevent potential issues down the line.

How to repair a sump pump

If your sump pump isn’t working properly, there are a few simple fixes you can try before calling in a pro.

Start by checking the power source to make sure it’s plugged in, and the circuit breaker hasn’t tripped.

Next, clear out any debris from the pump pit, as clogged dirt can cause blockages and prevent the sump pump from working correctly.

Inspect the float switch to see if it’s obstructed – sometimes it just needs a gentle nudge to move it freely. If it is pumping water as it should be, the impeller might be damaged. In this case, it will likely need to be thoroughly cleaned or potentially replaced.
