How is my sump pump meant to work?

Sump pumps are installed in basements and cellars to prevent water damage caused by flooding. The pump should only switch on when the water level reaches the pre-set level. The water is then pumped through the outlet, away from the foundations.

It should run quietly, and with the correct maintenance, function efficiently.

If your sump pump is showing signs of any of the following, it is highly recommended to invest in a replacement.

1. Making loud noises

Your sump pump shouldn’t be making excessive noise. If it is, it might indicate worn or damaged parts. It could be a failed bearing in your motor, a jammed propeller, or an old pump that’s come to the end of its life.

2. Vibrates excessively

If your pump is vibrating when running, it may have sucked up debris and bent or damaged its impellers. If this is the case, the damaged impeller impacts the whole shaft which they spin on, causing the vibrations.

It is nearly impossible to re-bend them, so it’s best practice to invest in a new pump.

3. Running constantly

Is your cellar or basement pump continuing to run even when the water levels don’t require it? If so, excessive strain is put on the pump motor by trying to drain water that isn’t in the basin. This will run the machine into disrepair, so it is recommended that you find a replacement as soon as possible.

4. Runs for a long time

If your pump is running for several minutes at once, it’s likely that the pump doesn’t have enough horsepower for the volume of water or the distance it needs to pump the water. After investigating, an expert may suggest a larger pump or basin, or a pump with a higher capacity.

5. Irregular cycling

There may be an issue with the pump if it is frequently cycling on and off. It could be a result of a wiring malfunction or a short in the electrical system. Replacement is the best option in this scenario because the pump won’t be functioning efficiently if it’s taking too long to empty water from the basin or cuts off for no reason.

6. Pump is clogged

A clogged sump pump basin will eventually cause the impeller fan blades to jam and put strain on the pump motor. It also risks flood water rushing back into your basement since it can’t escape through the clogged basin. And, if the pump becomes clogged with debris itself, it will be difficult to clear any water out.

A clogged sump pump doesn’t necessarily require a replacement pump, unless it causes significant damage to the motor or impeller blades. You can find out more about how to maintain and service your sump pump in our Essential Tips and Maintenance Advice guide.

7. Not been used

If there has been no reason for your sump pump to be in use, it may have created issues for itself. This is likely, especially if you haven’t tested the pump in a while.

As great as sump pump lifespans are, unfortunately they can’t last forever. If your sump pump is 7 years old or more, it’s time to replace it. This will ensure it performs efficiently and prevents water levels from rising.
